I have the same camera as Jodi Picoult (and a giveaway!)

Posted on Wednesday~March 18, 2009

I met Jodi Picoult.
Yup, here's proof, right here in this picture.
That's me on your left.
Jodi Picoult is right there in the middle.
And The Amazing Auntie Kay is on your right.
(My Aunt, not Jodi's.)

I'd like to tell you that I had a very eloquent exchange with Jodi P., like the one I had planned.
In that daydream, the one I had while I was standing in line, I said,
"You rock!" And she responded excitedly with, "Why, thank you!!!"

(See? Totally eloquent.)

But no, that's not what happened. Instead, I just stood there and smiled like a big freak.
Even when she looked right at me and said "HI" real nice, I still just stood there and smiled.
Yeah, I did that until the person who was taking the photo of us couldn't figure out my camera.
Then I said (so eloquently) "You have to look through the hole, just regular, not on the screen."
(The HOLE?)

And then Jodi asked what kind of camera it was.
I somehow found words and responded.
And then she said that she has the same camera.
I smiled. (Yeah, that's all I did.)
Then Jodi continued the one-sided conversation,
"You can't take a bad picture with it, and I need that," she said.
To which I responded (with eloquence),
"Me too."
(smile. smile. smile. cheesy, cheesy smile.)
(Yeah. That's it. Just, "Me too.")
-------------------------
Let's move on, shall we?

Here is Jodi's (yes, now we're on a first-name basis) newest book:

"When Charlotte and Sean O’Keefe’s daughter, Willow, is born with severe osteogenesis imperfecta, they are devastated – she will suffer hundreds of broken bones as she grows, a lifetime of pain. As the family struggles to make ends meet to cover Willow’s medical expenses, Charlotte thinks she has found an answer. If she files a wrongful birth lawsuit against her ob/gyn for not telling her in advance that her child would be born severely disabled, the monetary payouts might ensure a lifetime of care for Willow. But it means that Charlotte has to get up in a court of law and say in public that she would have terminated the pregnancy if she’d known about the disability in advance – words that her husband can’t abide, that Willow will hear, and that Charlotte cannot reconcile..." - taken from Jodi Picoult.com

This book begs the question,
What constitutes a valuable life?

Oh yeah, I know you want to read it!
So here's your chance:

Leave me a comment and you'll be entered to win a signed copy of Handle with Care.
(Yes, I purchased TWO. One for you and one for me.)

That's all you have to do. Simply leave a comment. Then I'll use random.org to choose one of you to win this book. (Signed by Jodi Picoult herself right in front of my very own eyes.)

(If you don't have a blogging account, don't worry, just hit 'Post a Comment' and choose Anonymous. Then sign your name and leave your email so I can contact you if you win.)

I'll leave the comments open until Saturday, March 21st at 9pm central.
(Contest not limited to the United States.)

Good luck! Go for it! Let's read together. It'll be a little book club of sorts.
You, me, and The Amazing Auntie Kay. Good Luck!

What an awesome day, even if you didn't know what to say. The book looks great. If I don't win I'm going to be very, very sad.

It sounds like a good book!

Eloquent indeed. Her books were all over the airport bookstores. I should know. I spent the better part of this week in airports. But didn't read her books. I have friends who read her books. And there's you! And you're my friend. Thanks in advance for randomly choosing me, so I can join in the JP fun.

That was funny...you just smiled like a big freak! :)

The first and only book I've read of hers so far was My Sister's Keeper and it was intense. It stayed with me for a long, long time. I loved it!

Ok, I'll join your little book club of sorts. I love a good book. (which is not including the one I'm desperately trying to wade through right now)

*swoon*

I do sooooo love her books. I'm a NH girl, you know. As is she. I actually bought this book on preorder from amazon, but I gave it to a friend that needed a pick-me-up. I figured I would wait forever on the library's list to get my turn. It's a good thing I didn't meet JP. I love her so much I might make out with her. And that might be..awkward. For my husband. And hers.

Jen said...

Oh how awesome. This sounds like an awesome book, I totally want to win.

And just to make you feel better. I LOVE a chef by the name of Giada de Laurentiis and when I got my book signed by her all I could do was smile and look at her shoes. I was just so smitten I couldn't even look at her or have my photo with her. *sigh*

You're so funny Heather. This is a great story. It's totally what I did when I met an author I really like. He was signing a book for me (I'd had it for a while) and says to me, "This is a well-loved book." To which I stuttered out some paltry explanation for why the book looked waterlogged.

Brooke said...

Apparently I'm a loser because I've never read her books. I need to win this! I love a good book, and a good author!

Randi said...

oo! Ooo!oooo! I want to win!

And you are completely darling!

Elle said...

Ooh, fun. And hey - you're better than I am. I went to hear Anne Lamott last spring and couldn't even gather up the nerve to stand in line to get the signature (though I blame that partially on Olive).

Bre said...

Now I'm insanely curious to know what kind of camera you have?!?!?

Sheryl said...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

This should not be a giveaway, this should just be a gift that you want to give me because I am so wonderful and so deserving. Geez!!

Okay, very jealous. Well, I am jealous of the fact that you met her not at all bothered by your very deep conversation.

Annette Lyon said...

No. Way. I wanna win!!!!

I'm eloquent too! And I like to read. Pick me!

Whether the conversation went well or not is a minor thing because the picture you got out of it is GREAT! You look darling. I am completely a loser because I have never read a book of hers but would love to. Hoping I win...

I don't usually enter these drawings because I feel I have been so blessed and lucky with all the things I have already received in my life. . .and that somebody else should have that chance to have that lovely feeling of having all the luck and being so blessed. . . but for a Jodi Picoult book. . . I'm all over it!!

Heidi said...

Maybe all you could do was smile but what a smile! You are adorable! (does that count for an entry? Or two? Not like I am trying to butter you up or anything . . .)

Reminds me of one time at a major league baseball game...Chris Sabo was leaving the field after batting practice, and I was at the front-row railing calling out to him, "Hey, Chris! I became a fan of yours years ago when you swept the World Series! My husband taught me all about baseball!" The whole time I was hollering, he was staring at me, receiving all of my input, waiting for me to request something...like an autograph? By the time he was 10 paces past me, I finally yelled out, "Can I have your autograph?" and he just shook his head and continued walking. What a silly girl I was. Am.

The Three 22nds said...

What kind of camera is it?

Sounds like an interesting book...I've never read anything by her...

Mozi Esme said...

This book looks thought-provoking - I'd love to read it! And I probably would've sent my husband to get it autographed, since I don't do so well in social settings. So I think you rocked!

Melanie Jacobson said...

I love meeting authors in real life and I love signed copies of books. Sign me up!

charrette said...

I love Jodi Picoult. I've read four or five of her books. They're fascinating. And gutsy. How fun you got to meet her!

And, um, I really need that signed book you're giving away. I'm almost finished with my current read and this new Jodi Picoult novel would be an excellent follow-up.

Count me in!

(Cute picture of you, by the way!)

Peanut said...

Ooooo, not limited to the US? Pick me! Pick me! I could SO use a good book to read right now.

LisAway said...

I don't think it would have sounded much better if you'd said, "You have to look through the viewfinder".

You're so funny. And I've never read anything of Jodi's. She probably got famous after I moved away.

And WHEN I win I'll give an address in America, of course.

Debbie said...

But did you tell her about me?
I would have stood there grinning and blabbering, there could have even been some drool involved. I've never met anyone remotely famous and I so love Jodi. (I'm on a first name basis with her and haven't even met her!)

Radioactive Tori said...

I love books, but most of all I love your story about meeting her. I would totally have been the same way!

...sensible of shoe said...

That's cool! But not as cool as when Sue Grafton was at the Steamtown Mall...

Jeff and Valerie Carr said...

Yeah!!!! A contest not limited to the US!

I know I said this on someone else's blog, but once when I met Kirk Cameron all I could get out, rather rapidly, was "I wanted to marry you when I was 9"....I think he was embarrassed for me...

Angie said...

How you make me laugh! So cool that you met Jodi... I am an avid reader and am dying to get my hands on her new book. Thanks for hosting this.

Becky said...

Pick me, pick me!! I'm a huge Jodi Picoult fan. AND... a huge Heather fan. Ha! Now you have to pick me.

Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting said...

Oh my goodness, that sounds like an incredible book. That's gonna have my brain workin' overtime on that one, mulling that over, what I would do.

You know, I will probably do the same upon meeting you. Just smile a huge, teethy smile, happy and awestruck and all that ;)

Sounds like a good book, it's been a while since I've read something by her, so I'd love to win it!

jmt said...

I (shamefully) admit I haven't read her yet. I know there are some of her books back in our "work library" where people donate old books for others to use, I will have to go grab one. How fun - another giveaway! :)

Unknown said...

I love your "eloquence" and I would love to win!

Dedee said...

Please! Please me!

So my daughter and I met Gail Carson Levine and I got lucky in that we had a copy of one of her paperback books that had just come out through scholastic and she hadn't seen yet. She sat and looked it over and was excited about seeing it. It was actually quite interesting to watch her. You could tell it was her book, no matter who it belonged to. She almost handled it like a baby.

Very cool even if you forgot to wax eloquent!

Jessica Stock said...

you make me LAUGH! I wish we were friends . . . I mean more than just blogger friends . . . is this sounding creepy? sorry, I just mean I think I would have peed my pants laughing if I'd have been with you! (and wouldn't have been able to say a word either!)

And I love Jodie Picoult and would love the book!

Rach@In His Hands said...

Love love love love love Jodi Picoult!!! I'm super jealous that you got to meet her.....and that you both have so much in common. ;-)

Did I mention that you are awesome? Or will that not help me win?! Kidding. Love ya.

I'm so jealous! I love Jodi Picoult and would have spent all my time grilling her about how to get my book published. I would love to win her new book....I haven't read it yet. So PICK ME!!

Ohhh, that sounds so good. You look really cute in the picture by the way. Cheesy cheese looks good on you. Ok so you know how much I need this book! Do I get a better chance if I leave a bunch of comments. I can you know? Don't tempt me. ;o)

I have been known to completely ignore my family when I have a good Jodi Picoult book to read. So...they get enough attention, SIGN ME UP! :)

I love signed books. I have stood in many lines and smiled stupidly at many amazing authors.

I fear our book club has died, so I'll try to join your blog book club.

Jackie said...

Are you kidding me? SO jealous you got to meet her, and I can guarantee that I would have been MUCH less eloquent if I came face to face with the great Jodi Picoult. Love her work, I just picked up two of her books from the library yesterday.

Great giveaway!

You did really good, letting Jodi interview you like that. I thought you were quite charming and eloquent. In a very humble way. Very.

And Jodi signed my...I mean the prize copy of the book, too?

How fun!

I actually knew someone with a little boy with this disease. He is about 9 years old now and they had to move away when he was 6 to live closer to a major hospital. He seems like a normal little boy, except he might eventually need a wheelchair.
I had never heard of that problem before meeting that family.

Sounds like a date, right?

You rock, lmao!!!!!
